Hello, I’m Jamba.
This morning I woke up after a very rough night. The night wasn’t different to any other night, it was the same cold room, same broken shack, same people and the same overcrowded unsafe township.
Last night it rained terribly and the floods started. Families in townships need to know when floods are coming so they canprotect their shacks, but……we were not ready!
I spent most of the night helping my family clean up all the water and before I knew it, it was morning and I had to go to school.
It takes about 30 minutes to walk to school. On my way to school I came upon school children that were walking around the township. They were wearing beautiful ties with snow white shirts. On their shirts it said Parklands. I was very confused why they were here!
I got a bit distracted and had to run to school to get there on time. I had to jump and leap over plastic, dirt and broken bottles. There is so much litter in the streets. When I got to school I had to sit down to rest my feet. I had blisters and cuts on my feet because I don’t have any school shoes, nor do my friends.
After a few minutes of resting I was off to class. Suddenly I noticed the Parklands children arrive at our school. They came into our class. They were very friendly and gave us all gifts. I got a beautiful, pair of pink takkies. I put them on the minute I got them.
We eventually went outside to play netball, they were really good. Their teacher was also there, she stood on the side and watched us play. When the game was over the teacher called me and asked me if I was interested in a scholarship at Parklands. Of course I said yes, but I had to ask my mom and dad, so I gave her my mom’s work number.
What a fantastic day I had. I had to run home, with my new takkies, to get there before dark. It is not safe in the township at night. I also had to collect water on the way so I could cook dinner and bath before my parents get home from work.
My mom works on the tills at Pick n Pay, She got home very late. She had great news. Parklands called her and she said yes. I am very excited!
Thank you for putting effort and thought into your post, Jemma. You express Jamba's point of view effectively, including many challenges she faces. You also planned a cohesive story line which links all your ideas together.
